Sweater Weather . . .

Its finally time! The chill in the air . . . wood burning fires . . . all the pumpkin spice things . . . warm and cozy textiles. If you’ve been around here for any length of time, its easy to see that FALL IS MY FAVORITE. I want to crochet all the soft and cozy things, and this is the time of year when my creativity really starts to flourish with sweater and cardigan designs, scarves and wraps using autumn-inspired hand-dyed yarn and warm blankets for every room in my house. The saturated colors of fall are truly the jewels of this time of year, and I am excited to present my first fall-inspired design of the season – The Autumn Hues Striped Sweater!

The Inspiration for this Classic Striped Sweater

I wanted to create a relaxed and comfortable crochet sweater for casual wearing with a traditional and classic shape. The stripes give this sweater an eye-catching contrast that is mirrored down the sleeves, and the shaping of the neckline keeps the sweater nice and easy-fitting. And I love ribbed hems on sweaters for that squishy, stretchy feel! This striped sweater is made with the herringbone half-double crochet, such a fun and easy stitch to work and one that creates great texture without the finished sweater becoming too clunky and boxy.

Oh, that yarn!

I love trying out new yarn, and as soon as Lion Brand Yarn came out with Color Theory, I knew I wanted to make a sweater with it. Color Theory is a #4 worsted-weight acrylic yarn that is so soft and squishy and the drape on this finished striped sweater is incredible. The colors for my project pretty much choose themselves, they are all designed to work with each other to make your choices effortless; the colorways Canyon, Moonbeam, Himalayan Salt and Tourmaline were exactly the look I was going for and I started to get really excited about this design once I had crocheted enough rows to see how all four colors played off each other. I would definitely recommend this yarn for your project, you can purchase it through my affiliate link here!

OVERALL PATTERN NOTES:

  • Pattern is written in smallest size with larger sizes following in parentheses:  XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X).
  • This striped sweater is worked in two panels for the main body that are then seamed together at the shoulders and sides, and sleeves are worked separately and seamed onto the body at the end.
  • The front panel is worked as the back panel except for the last few rows for the collar shaping.
  • Ribbing for the striped sweater hem and sleeve cuffs is worked separately with the smaller hook and then seamed onto the crochet sweater.
  • The panels and sleeves are seamed together using yarn in the same color as that section; leaving longer yarn tails (at least twice the length of the color section) when switching colors will make it easier to use those yarn tails for seaming.
  • Ch 2 and Ch 1 count as a stitch unless otherwise indicated in the pattern.
  • Placing a stitch marker somewhere on the RS as you are working rows will help you determine the placement of the panels and sleeves before seaming.
  • It is recommended for this pattern to use the mattress stitch seaming method for all seams.

Special Stitches

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HBhdc):  YO, insert hook into intended stitch.  YO, pull through the stitch AND first loop on the hook (three loops on the hook).  YO, pull through all three loops.

Half Double Crochet Two Together (hd2tog):  YO, insert hook into intended stitch.  YO, pull through the stitch (three loops on the hook).  Insert the hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through the stitch (four loops on the hook).  YO and pull through all four loops.

Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog):  Insert hook into intended stitch, YO, pull through the stitch (two loops on the hook).  Insert the hook into the next stitch, YO (three loops on the hook), YO and pull through all three loops.

Front Panel

Repeat instructions as for Back Panel until Row 53 (53, 55, 55, 55) (57, 58, 58, 60) is complete, changing colors per the chart for the back panel and ending with last row as a RS row.  Do not fasten off, move on to collar shaping in COLOR C (Moonbeam) for all sizes.

Front Panel Shaping

With the front panel lying flat, you will place stitch markers to indicate where the shoulder shaping will begin.  The markers are placed by counting from the outer edge of panel inwards.

Count 20 (21, 22, 23, 24) (24, 24, 24, 24) sts from both right and left side and place marker in last st counted. Sts between markers should count 25 (25, 26, 28, 28) (29, 29, 31, 31) sts for neck opening.

Refer to the slideshow below for an example of stitch marker placement (size Medium).

SEAMING THE PANELS TOGETHER

Place the back panel RS facing up and place the front panel on top with the WS facing up, lining up the rows and stripes.  You will be seaming the panels together with the inside of the striped sweater facing out, and this pattern recommends the mattress stitch seaming method.  Line up the stitches of the shoulders with the stitches of the back panel and place markers to hold in place.

Place markers at the armholes 7 (7.5, 8, 8, 8.5) (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10) inches from the shoulder seams; continue to place markers down the sides of the crochet sweater, making sure to line up the rows and stripes.

With the yarn tails in COLOR C (Moonbeam), seam the shoulders using the mattress stitch seaming method.

If you have left longer yarn tails for each color section, use the yarn tails to seam the sides together.

Otherwise, with COLOR C (Moonbeam), join yarn at the right/left armpit and seam the panels together until the next color is reached.  Join the next color yarn and seam; continue in this way down each side, seaming each color stripe with that color yarn.

COLLAR EDGING

With the sweater turned right side out and with the front panel facing up, join yarn in COLOR C (Moonbeam) at the first stitch from the shoulder join of the back panel.  This will be on the right side of the sweater as it is lying flat.

Round 1:  Ch 1, sc in same st as join.  PM in this st.   Sc in next st and each st across the back panel.  Sc into ends of shaped rows from front panel and along sts of front panel.  Sc into ends of shaped rows of opposite shoulder back to marked st.  Sc in marked st, do not turn.  PM in this st.

Round 2:  Sc in each st around the collar back to the marked st.  Sl st to marked st, fasten off.

SLEEVES (make 2 identical)

The striped sleeves are worked flat in turned rows from the wrist to the shoulder and then seamed together.  Then the sleeves are seamed onto the striped sweater at the armholes.  Rows will increase by 2 stitches as indicated in the chart below and color changes are indicated.

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for seaming.

SEAMING THE SLEEVES

Repeat for both sleeves:

Lay the sleeves flat with RS facing up and fold the sleeve over to line up the rows and stripes.  WS is now facing up; pin the sleeve together down the inner seam to hold in place.

If you have left longer yarn tails for each color section, use the yarn tails to seam the sleeves together using the mattress stitch seaming method.

Otherwise, beginning with the yarn tail in COLOR C (Moonbeam), seam the sleeve together, working from the largest row down until the next color is reached.  Join the next color yarn and seam; continue in this way down the inside seam of the sleeve, seaming each color of the striped sweater with that color yarn.

The sleeve will be seamed onto the sweater with COLOR C (Moonbeam).  With the main body of the sweater and the sleeve facing WS up, join yarn at the armpit.  Seam the sleeve onto the crochet sweater and fasten off.

RIBBING

Main Sweater Body

With COLOR A (Canyon) – Using 4.5 mm hook, ch 11.

Row 1:  Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across.  Turn.  (10)

Row 2:  Hdc in BLO in same st as tch and in each st across, ending with last hdc in both loops.  Turn.  (10)

Repeat Row 2 until length of ribbing matches the circumference of the entire hem of the sweater.  The ribbing should naturally lay flat without any shaping or stretching.

  • Fasten off leaving a yarn tail at least twice the length of the sweater hem.
  • With the sweater facing WS up, seam the ribbing onto the hem of the striped sweater using the mattress stitch seam, working the yarn through ends of the ribbing rows and the stitches at the bottom of the sweater (the foundation chain).
  • Take care not to pull the seam too tightly so the bottom of the sweater will retain the stretch and give of the ribbing.
  • Once you have seamed all the way back around to where you started, seam the short ends of the ribbing together.

Sleeve Cuffs (make two)

With COLOR A (Canyon) – Using 4.5 mm hook, ch 11.

Row 1:  Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across.  Turn.  (10)

Row 2:  Hdc in BLO in same st as tch and in each st across, ending with last hdc in both loops.  Turn.  (10)

Repeat Row 2 until length of ribbing matches the circumference of the entire cuff of the sleeve.  The ribbing should naturally lay flat without any shaping or stretching.

  • Fasten off leaving a yarn tail at least twice the length of the cuff.
  • With the crochet sweater facing WS up, seam the ribbing onto the cuff of the sleeve using the mattress stitch seam, working the yarn through ends of the ribbing rows and the stitches at the bottom of the cuff (the foundation chain).
  • Take care not to pull the seam too tightly so the cuff will retain the stretch and give of the ribbing.
  • Once you have seamed all the way back around to where you started, seam the short ends of the ribbing together.
