Recently, I have rediscovered my love for making blankets.  Blankets were the first projects I tried when I started crocheting, and they are the best way to learn basic stitches, practice your tension and improve your skills.  There are so many creative blanket designs out there for all skill levels, textures, and stitch combinations in virtually all the colors of the rainbow that come together in whatever way inspires you most.  And sometimes you just need a restful project with a simple single row repeat that you can work on in between other more intricate projects – the Geode Blanket checks off all these boxes!

The texture of the Geode Blanket is created by working single crochet and double crochet into the same stitch, creating clusters that give the blanket an overall raised texture that stands out.  This is an easy single-row repeat that is perfect for beginner crocheters and the larger hook size gives the finished bulky textured crochet blanket drape and squishiness.  The modern stripe pattern is created by alternating thin and progressively thicker stripes, so it seems as if the colors are gradually moving and phasing into one another.

Depending on your design and overall desired look, finishing a blanket with a border can create the exact look you want. I felt this bulky textured crochet blanket didn’t really need that and luckily the edges of the turned rows created a subtle scalloped look.  And fringes because . . . FRINGES.  I am obsessed with tassels and fringes and must hold myself back from putting them on everything that I make.  For this project, I love the way they look along the edges, but you can leave them off if you like.  It’s all about that creative process and making a project your own!

LET’S TALK YARN . . .

I typically gravitate towards worsted or DK/sport weight yarn for my projects, but Lion Brand’s Hue + Me is a super popular #5 bulky yarn that comes in so many gorgeous colors that it was hard to decide which ones to use.  Hue + Me is an acrylic and wool blend yarn that is machine washable and dryable, and I used the colorways of Bellini, Peacoat, and Arrowwood for this bulky textured crochet blanket.  The 20% wool content makes this yarn an easy choice for easy-to-work cold-weather projects that wear well and stand up to the test of time.

This bulky textured crochet blanket is an easy beginner-friendly project that won’t take forever to finish and is perfect for any skill level. Get started on yours now!

PATTERN NOTES:

  • There is no wrong side or right side to this reversible blanket. The rows worked in just one color will look thinner or thicker depending on the point in the pattern you are switching colors to.
  • The starting chain is worked with the same hook size as the rest of the blanket; if you work this chain loosely, it will help to prevent the next row from puckering. It might be helpful to go up a hook size if that works better for you.
  • The ch 2 turning chain does NOT count as a stitch.
  • The pattern is worked by repeating one row and switching colors at the end of the indicated row before turning.
  • You will work each cluster (sc, dc in the same stitch) into what was the single crochet from the previous row. The clusters will stack on top of each other to create texture.
