The Romance Wrap!

Sometimes I have a detailed and well thought-out idea for a design, including the specific type and color of yarn that I want to use . . . and sometimes the yarn tells me what it wants to be! The latter was particularly the case for this textured crochet wrap design. The hand-dyed yarn featured in this project is from Sewrella Yarn from the Halloween-inspired collection released last fall. I saw the Candy Apple colorway on the Stellina DK base and knew immediately that it wanted to be a sparkly fun and festive wrap that can be worn as an accessory with a sleeveless cocktail dress at a fancy dinner party or with jeans on a date night.

Textured Crochet Wrap Design and Inspiration

The herringbone half double crochet stitch was just the look I wanted for this textured crochet wrap, and it’s a great stitch for a beginner who is looking to expand their skills. This easy and repetitive stitch works up fast while you are listening to an audiobook or your favorite podcast or binge-watching your latest show. This stitch also provides more of a closed stitch look, rather than an open lacy accessory, so the wrap can be worn for additional warmth as well as for style. Crochet as few or as many rows as you like to customize the length of this wrap. Finish your wrap with a flirty and feminine ruffle as the pattern is written or even add fringe or tassels to make this project truly your own!

Hand-dyed Yarn for the Win!

It’s no secret that I adore working with hand-dyed yarn. It brings such an exclusive vibe to my projects and the quality of the yarn always shines through. I am so impressed with this Stellina yarn base from Sewrella Yarn; metallic yarn is usually pretty scratchy but the blend of superwash merino wool and nylon is the perfect combination with the bits of Stellina for a super soft yarn that is a joy to work with. This specific colorway is not available, as it was part of a pre-order collection, but you can find this yarn base and others as ready-to-ship seasonal tonals at the Sewrella Yarn website. Of course, any DK weight yarn will work perfectly for this textured crochet wrap, and I recommend Swish DK, Alpaca Cloud DK or Gloss DK from WeCrochet, or LB Collection Superwash Merino from Lion Brand as alternate economical options.

Finished Wrap:  approximately 21” X 68.5”

HBhdc – herringbone half double crochet

st(s) – stitch(es)

tch – turning chain

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

PATTERN NOTES:

  • This wrap is crocheted from the short side in turned rows to create length.
  • Ch 2 does count as a stitch; ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch.
  • If you are adding additional rows, make sure to end on an even-numbered row.  Stitch markers can be used to mark rows in increments of 10 or 20 to keep track of the rows.
  • The wrap is finished with a feminine ruffle detail along the long side of the wrap that is created by working single crochets and chains into the same space as indicated.
  • I did not block my finished wrap, but you may wish to lightly steam block your project if you feel the stitches need to be smoothed out or the ruffle is not lying flat.
  • I had leftover yarn after working the number of rows indicated in the pattern and completing the final row of edging but please make sure to purchase additional yarn if you wish to add rows or embellishments like tassels or fringe to your finished wrap.

Special Stitches

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HBhdc):  YO, insert hook into intended stitch.  YO, pull through the stitch AND first loop on the hook (two loops on the hook).  YO, pull through both loops.

THE PATTERN:

Foundation Row:  Ch 76

Row 1:  HBhdc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across.  Turn.   (74 HBhdc sts)

Row 2:  Ch 2, HBhdc in next st and in each st across, ending with last HBhdc worked in top of tch.  Turn.   (74 HBhdc sts)

Rows 3 – 206:  Repeat Row 2.  Do not turn after completing the last row.

Ruffle Border

After completing the last (even numbered) row, turn your work so the long side of the wrap is horizontal.

Row 1 (WS):  Ch 1, sc evenly into the ends of the rows, approximately one sc for each HBhdc row.  Turn.  (206 sc sts)

Row 2 (RS):  Ch 1, sc in same st as base of tch.  *(Sc, ch 1, sc) in next st.  Sc in next two sts.*  Repeat from * to * until either one or two stitches remain.

  • If you have only one st remaining, sc in last st.
  • If you have two sts remaining, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next st, sc in last st.

Place stitch marker somewhere on this side after completing row 2 to indicate the right side.

Opposite Side:

Flip the wrap so the wrong side is facing up and join yarn at the upper right corner of the other short side.

Repeat instructions as for first side Row 1 and 2

Weave in all your ends, and you are done!
