Inspiration and Design

My design process for this lightweight crochet wrap is a perfect example of how the landscape blooms and changes during this time of year. Initially, the original swatches looked very different from the finished wrap. However, as I continued to work with various stitch combinations and color blocks, the overall vision kept evolving. Actually, I love this organic type of design! Although the end result wasn’t exactly true to the starting vision, that’s perfectly. In fact, I absolutely love the finished wrap. Not only is it a beautiful combination of textured Iris stitches and open mesh-like stitch work, but it also has such visual interest between the sections and color blocks. All of these elements together make this beginner-friendly project both exciting and joyful to work on.

Oh, That Yarn!

Lately, I have been more intentional about using yarn that I already have in my extensively curated collection. For example, my last pattern, the Embrace Cardigan, used stash yarn that was originally intended for a different project. However, I was able to repurpose it for a fresh new design. Similarly, when thinking about the elements of a lightweight crochet wrap for a spring release, I decided to go through all my fingering and sport weight yarn for inspiration. Eventually, I found some one-of-a-kind fingering-weight skeins from Ruby & Roses Yarn in different shades of purples and pinks. Once I laid the skeins out together on my worktable, the color combinations began to remind me of emerging spring flowers, like tulips, hyacinths, crocuses, and hellebores. Naturally, this became the inspiration for the color blocks in the Equinox Wrap!

While the colorway used in the featured crochet cowl is specific to one-of-a-kind hand-dyed yarn by Ruby & Roses Yarn and is no longer available, there are many independent yarn dyers with in-stock yarn and new collections are frequently released.

Here are a few of my favorite yarn dyers, check them out:

  • Sewrella Yarn
  • Montana Crochet
  • Long Dog Yarn
  • Ruby & Roses Yarn
  • Hue Loco

Alternate yarn options that are not hand-dyed yarn:

Fingering Weight Yarn – Hawthorne Fingering, Palette, Alpaca Cloud Fingering, Gloss and Stroll.

Scissors

Yarn Needle

Measuring Tape

GAUGE:        18 hdc sts = 4 inches; 5 iris sts = 4.5 inches

                        9 hdc rows/2 dc rows (section 3 in pattern) = 3.5 inches

5 iris st rows (section 2 in pattern) = 2 inches

7 iris st rows (section 4 in pattern) = 2.75 inches

Gauge is not particularly important for this project as long as the drape of your project is as desired.  If the wrap is stiff and the stitches are working too tightly, consider going up a half or whole hook size.

Finished Wrap: 21.5 inches wide X 61 inches long.

ABBREVIATIONS

ch(s) – chain(s)

hdc – half double crochet

dc – double crochet

sk – skip

st(s) – stitch(es)

tch – turning chain

ch-sp – chain space

PATTERN NOTES:

  • This lightweight crochet wrap is reversible with no wrong side or right side.
  • The wrap is worked from the short side in turned rows to increase length, switching colors as indicated.
  • The pattern is written in sections, with repeats as indicated within each section or for the entire section.
  • Blocking your finished wrap is not required, but you may wish to lightly steam block your project if you feel the edges need to be smoothed out.
  • Ch 1 and Ch 2 and Ch 3 do NOT count as a stitch; overall stitch counts are indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of each indicated row.
  • Create the featured Iris stitch by working two double crochets, chain one and two double crochets into the same stitch.  This is shown as (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the pattern.  Iris stitches for each row are worked into the ch-sp from the row below.  The overall count at the end of Iris stitch rows is indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the row and will be the total number of Iris stitches, not the number of double crochet stitches sts.
  • The specific amount of yarn used for each color, per gauge, is indicated in the materials section by grams.  I used five individual colorways for the finished sample, but any number of colorways can be used as this is a great project for using up yarn scraps.  If you are using partial skeins, make sure to weigh your skeins first to ensure you have enough yarn for each color block section.
