It’s finally October, and the days are getting a bit shorter.  I love this time of year – the leaves are starting to change and the light gets all golden in the evenings, there’s a chill in the morning air, and pumpkin-spice-everything.  It’s still not quite sweater-weather around here, but a girl can dream, and I am well into making all the fall and winter projects so I will be ready when it does get cold (might be next week, might be Thanksgiving – who knows?).

A long warm scarf is a staple in the cold weather months, and I wanted to make an easy beginner-friendly scarf that doesn’t take a lot of time to finish.  And so, the Mountain Sunset Scarf was created!

The mountains have a special place in my heart.  Growing up, I spent so many holidays and summer weeks with my grandmothers in the western part of Virginia where my family is from, and then I went to college in the mountains.  There is something magical about the way the sun sets over our North Carolina mountains no matter what time of the year; the colors are richer and more saturated, and the trees give off a blue hue that is unique to this area.

Let’s talk about that yarn!

This easy project was inspired by those colors, and I found the perfect yarn – Lion Brand Landscapes yarn in Mountain Range.  This yarn is a CYC #4 worsted weight yarn that is so soft and warm, with a lovely halo and fuzziness.  It comes in several beautiful colorways, so choose the one that speaks the most to you!

You will love the way those sunset colors reveal themselves as you are crocheting this scarf.  And oh my, the fringe – who doesn’t love fringe!?  This scarf is made using my all-time favorite stitch, the half-double crochet.  This is such an easy and versatile stitch that results in a beautiful texture and this pattern is so simple you can crochet this while binging your favorite Netflix show.

Mountain Sunset Scarf

An easy, beginner-friendly scarf using a simple stitch with a fun fringe detail, that works up quickly and will keep you warm while looking fabulous!

SKILL LEVEL:  Beginner +

MATERIALS:

US Size K/6.5 mm crochet hook

Lion Brand Landscapes – 3 skeins in Mountain Range

Scissors

Yarn needle

GAUGE:

Gauge is not important for this project.

ABBREVIATIONS:

ch – chain

hdc – half double crochet

st(s) – stitch(es)

PATTERN NOTES:

  • This scarf is crocheted using the half-double crochet stitch:
    • Yarn over, insert your hook into the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop.  There are three loops on your hook.  Yarn over, pull through all three loops on your hook.
  • There is no wrong side or right side.
  • The ch 1 turning chain does not count as a stitch.
  • I prefer to only chain 1 for the turning chain, as this results in a neater edge.
  • Add or remove rows to your desired length, but make sure to have enough yarn if you want to make your scarf longer. I had little yarn left over after completing 173 rows and adding the fringe.

THE PATTERN:

Ch 23

Row 1: HDC in 2nd ch from the hook and across the row (22). Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: HDC in the 1st st.  HDC in each stitch across the row until the end (22).  Ch 1, turn.

Row 3-173 – Repeat row 2.  Fasten off.

Attaching the fringe:

I did separate the individual colors out before cutting them into pieces, so I could get a better idea of how to lay them out. This is totally optional! As you can see, the yarn gets a bit curlier the closer I got to the end of my skein, so I ended up steaming the fringe AFTER I added the pieces to the scarf so they would lay flatter. I used this handheld garment steamer.

Cut the pieces into 12-inch strips and lay them out the way you want to apply them to your scarf ends.

Insert your crochet hook into where you want to place your fringe; using your hook, pull through two strands of yarn (left photo).

Pull the ends of your yarn through the loop made (middle photo), and tighten (right photo).

My finished scarf had 14 separate fringes on each scarf end, but feel free to customize this however you like. Trim up your fringes and steam if needed, and you are DONE!
