Design and Inspiration

There was a lot of trial and error to perfect the perfect ripple stitch and create a light and airy textured project. And with hand-dyed yarn, it was challenging to make sure I had enough of each color to create the width and length that I wanted. It all came together in the end, and I absolutely love the finished design! The ripple stitch repeat is a multiple of 16 plus one for the starting chain. After the initial foundation row, the pattern is an easy four row repeat. This ripple stitch crochet wrap is beginner friendly with basic stitches like single crochet and double crochet. The finished sample features five alternating colors that are repeated in eight row blocks. It’s an easy and relaxing stitch to work, and so satisfying to watch the project grow as colors are added.

The inspiration for this ripple stitch crochet wrap started with an unexpected color palette. It is quintessential “beach”, from the range of blues in the variegated yarn to the speckles and the solid tones – sand, ocean, seashells and sky. I love crocheting and designing with fingering weight yarn! Working with a thinner weight yarn can feel a bit intimidating but the results are so satisfying. The drape of this wrap is absolute perfection, especially after a light steam block. I used Nylon Sock yarn from a Sewrella Yarn Oopsie sale. They put together the most amazing soft dreamy beach palette. This project is perfect for using those special skeins you have been saving, using up scraps or mini skeins.

The Seashell Fade Wrap – Free Crochet Pattern for a Ripple Stitch Crochet Wrap

SKILL LEVEL: Advanced Beginner

MATERIALS:

US Size G/6 4.50 mm crochet hook

#1/Fingering Weight Yarn, approximately 378 grams used in five colorways.

Featured yarn:
- Sewrella Yarn #1/Fingering Weight Yarn 80% Superwash Merino Wool/20% Nylon – 400 yards/100g
  - Color A – 90 total grams used
  - Color B – 72 total grams used
  - Color C – 72 total grams used
  - Color D – 72 total grams used
  - Color E – 72 total grams used

GAUGE: 16 st repeat (dc sts) = 3 inches | 8 row repeat (2 dc rows, 2 sc rows) = 2 inches

Gauge is not particularly important for this project as long as the drape of your project is as desired. If the wrap is stiff and the stitches are working too tightly, consider going up a half or whole hook size. All measurements indicated are prior to blocking.

Finished Wrap: 21 inches wide X 62 inches long.

PATTERN NOTES:

There is no wrong side or right side to this reversible wrap.
The wrap is worked from the short side in turned rows to increase length, switching colors as indicated.
This project features an easy ripple stitch worked in a simple four row repeat. The ripple stitch repeat is a multiple of 16 plus 1. Color blocks are alternated throughout the wrap in eight row repeats, after working the first double crochet row as foundation.
The specific amount of yarn used for each color, per gauge, is indicated in the materials section by grams. I used five individual colorways for the finished sample, but any number of colorways can be used as this is a great project for using up yarn scraps. If you are using partial skeins, make sure to weigh your skeins first to ensure you have enough yarn for each color block section.
The finished wrap consists of 6 repeats of the five-color section (40 rows) and ends with the last 8 rows in color A.
Ch 1 and Ch 3 count as stitches; overall stitch counts are indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of each indicated row.
I recommend using a stitch marker to mark the first stitch worked in each row to help with placement of the last stitch.
Blocking your finished wrap is not required, but you may wish to lightly steam block your project if you feel the edges need to be smoothed out.

Special Stitches:

Double Crochet Two Together (dc2tog) – YO, insert hook into intended stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops (two loops remaining on the hook). YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO, pull through two stitches, pull through remaining three stitches.

THE PATTERN:

With Color A, ch 113.

Row 1: Dc in 4^th ch from hook (ch 3 counts as st here). Dc in next four chs. Work (dc2tog in next 2 chs) twice. *Dc in next five chs, 2 dc in next ch, 2 dc in next ch. Dc in next five chs. Work (dc2tog in next 2 chs) twice.* Repeat from * to * across until five chs remain. Dc in next four chs, 2 dc in last ch. Turn. (110 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in both loops of same st at base of tch. Sc FLO in next st and each st across, ending with last sc in top of tch. Turn. (110 sts)
