Summer Layers That Pop

Air-conditioned spaces can sneak up on you in summer—one moment you’re basking in the warmth, the next you’re shivering in the frozen aisle of the grocery store or at your desk under an overzealous vent. That’s where the Calliope Shawl shines.

Its lightweight feel and generous drape make this asymmetrical crochet shawl an ideal layering companion. Toss it over your shoulders during an office meeting. Wrap it around your neck like a scarf at the movies. The fingering weight yarn keeps things light and breathable, while the fiber blend offers just enough warmth to keep you cozy—not stuffy.

But more than that, this shawl brings bright pops of summer color wherever it goes. Whether you’re wearing denim cutoffs, linen dresses, or your favorite cotton tee, it adds an effortless splash of sunshine.

Inspiration for The Calliope Shawl – A Yarn + Color Story

Before I started designing crochet pieces, I found the prospect of working with fingering weight yarn to be rather daunting. Initially, I believed it would be challenging to handle and difficult to maintain consistent tension. However, over time, I’ve come to realize that fingering weight yarn is amazing, and now I absolutely love working with it! It’s far more versatile than I expected and creates the most beautiful drape for wearables. Plus, it’s perfect for warm-weather projects, both while crocheting and for wearing. The Calliope Shawl showcases hand-dyed fingering weight yarn. The Superwash Merino/nylon blend is from Sewrella Yarn, one of my favorite indie dyers. Accordingly, I selected these colorways from their recent Greatest Hits Collection, which offered a fantastic range of options to choose from.

Even though it was in the dead of winter when this collection was available, I was drawn to bright and saturated tones. The multi-colored variegated skein was the foundation for selecting the complementary colors. And as soon as I paired coral, pink and purple together, the word “calliope” immediately came to mind for a project made with those hues! It had a whimsical charm brought to mind the nostalgia of carousel music, summer festivals and county fairs. I used a full 100 gram skein of the variegated yarn while solid colors were 50 gram half skeins. By working with smaller quantities, I was able to incorporate more colors, making this lightweight asymmetrical crochet shawl project ideal for stash busting and customizing.

Pattern Details for An Easy Asymmetrical Crochet Shawl

The Calliope Shawl is created by increasing each row by one stitch on the same side. To achieve this, work an increase either at the beginning of a row (working a stitch into the same stitch at the base of the turning chain) or at the end of a row (working two stitches into the top of the turning chain).  Crochet the shawl in an easy two-row repeat, switching colors as indicated in the chart provided. The pattern utilizes five colorways, one full 400-yard skein and four 200-yard skeins, making this a great stash buster project if you have smaller amounts of yarn. I used the majority of each of the five colorways for this design. Although each side features a distinct texture, there is no wrong side or right side to this reversible lightweight asymmetrical crochet shawl. In fact, it looks quite lovely worn either way!

  • Create this asymmetrical crochet shawl by increasing each row by one stitch on the same side.  Work an increase either at the beginning of a row (working a stitch into the same stitch at the base of the turning chain) or at the end of a row (working 2 stitches into the top of the turning chain).
  • The shawl is worked in a two-row repeat, switching colors as indicated in the chart provided.
  • Blocking your finished shawl is not required, but you may wish to lightly steam block your project to relax your stitches and smooth out your finished piece.
  • Ch 2 and Ch 3 count as a stitch; overall stitch counts are indicated in parentheses (  ) at the end of each indicated row.
  • The pattern utilizes five colorways, one full 400-yard skein and four 200-yard skeins, making this a great stash buster project if you have smaller amounts of yarn.
