Spring is around the corner!
Through the cold-weather winter months, I focus on bulkier crochet designs made for warmth and coziness – projects that you can wrap yourself up in and veg on the couch. I mean, that’s really my favorite thing and I really excel at that particular activity. Now that we are at the mid-point of March, I am starting to turn my creative efforts into more lightweight projects because everyone wants to get out of the house and enjoy the weather.
My last pattern release was the Hygge Pocket Shawl using bulky weight yarn, so it has been a nice change of pace to work with a lighter and more delicate DK weight yarn. I am excited to publish my first ever crochet spring wrap design – The Peony Wrap!

Simple in execution and shape but elegant in design, the Peony Wrap is that great transition piece from cold weather to those moderate temperatures. It was 50 degrees outside for this photoshoot and the day before we had snow flurries. Welcome to North Carolina, nothing could be finer than an unpredictable weather pattern! So, I am trying to get pictures while pretending it was not chilly and breezy outside and it was bearable because I was wearing this wrap. It’s perfect for those early spring days when it’s chilly in the morning but warmer in the afternoon, and if you work inside there is always someone who has the air conditioning cranked up no matter what time of the year it is. This crochet spring wrap is great to throw over your shoulders while working at your desk so you can get through the day.
ALL ABOUT THE YARN . . .
I purchased this DK weight yarn several months ago with no real idea of what I wanted to do with it. It sat in my bins and was sadly overlooked for other yarn choices until I was searching through my yarn stash for rectangle wrap inspiration. Gloss DK from WeCrochet is a blend of super-soft merino wool and silk that has the most amazing drape and comes in a variety of gorgeous, saturated colors. As the name suggests, the yarn has a slight sheen that really shows off defined stitches. All those months ago, I chose the colorway Velveteen and that ended up being the perfect choice for this crochet spring wrap and is the inspiration for naming this project after the beautiful peony flower.
I enjoyed using this yarn and would recommend it, but any DK weight yarn would work, and a hand-dyed option would be stunning with this stitch!
THE DESIGN . . .
I am all about texture in my crochet designs, and the tulip stitch delivers on that point. This stitch provides great definition and squishiness to your project and uses double crochet, two chains and one single crochet all worked into the same chain space for an easy one-row repeat. You can easily customize this crochet spring wrap to your preferred length, just make sure to have enough yarn on hand if you are making it longer. Don’t like fringe? This wrap would look just as beautiful without it. No one in my family likes it when I put fringe on my designs, I just don’t get it.
And the most beautiful thing about this stitch choice? It automatically creates a gorgeous scalloped border at the beginning and end of each row, which speeds up the finishing for this crochet spring wrap.

The Peony Wrap – Free Pattern for an Easy Crochet Wrap
SKILL LEVEL: Easy +
MATERIALS:
US Size J/10 6.00 mm crochet hook
WeCrochet Gloss: # 3/DK Weight 70% Merino Wool, 30% Silk – 123 yards/50 grams)
- Velveteen – 8 balls (approximately 984 yards)
Scissors
Yarn needle
Stitch Markers
GAUGE:
5 tulip stitches X 8 rows = 4 inches
- 2 double crochet, 2 chains and 1 single crochet = 1 tulip stitch
Finished Wrap: approximately 18” wide and 56” long
ABBREVIATIONS:
ch – chain
st – stitch
sts – stitches
dc– double crochet
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
ch2-sp – chain 2 space
OVERALL PATTERN NOTES:
- There is no wrong side or right side to this reversible crochet spring wrap.
- The starting chain is worked with the same hook size; make sure to chain loosely so your first row does not pull too tightly. You can also go up a hook size if that works better for you.
- The tulip stitch is created by working several stitches into the chain space created in the row below.
- The ch 2 turning chain DOES NOT count as a stitch; overall stitch count at the end of each row is for the total number of tulip stitches worked.
THE PATTERN:
Ch 88.
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook. Ch 2, sc in next ch. * Sk next 2 ch, 2 dc in next ch, ch 2, sc in next ch.* Repeat from * to * across, turn. (22 tulip stitches)
Row 2: Ch 2, sk 1st st from hook. (2 dc, ch 2, sc) in the ch2-sp from the row below. *Sk 3 sts. (2 dc, ch 2, sc) in ch2-sp from the row below.* Repeat from * to * across, turn. (22 tulip stitches)
Row 3 – 112: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
FRINGE DETAIL
Start by cutting several strands of yarn into pieces at least 10” long. For the wrap pictured, there are twelve fringes on each end.
You will be attaching the fringe to both of the 18-inch ends of your finished wrap. You may use stitch markers to reference where the fringes will be attached.
- Attach one strand of yarn to the bottom left of your wrap. Skip the next tulip stitch and attach two strands of yarn to the next stitch. (PHOTO A & B)
- Continue this process across the bottom of the wrap, attaching two strands of yarn in approximately every other tulip stitch. For the twelfth and final fringe, attach one strand of yarn at the bottom right corner. (PHOTO C & D)
- Working from left to right, split the second fringe in half and tie the entire first fringe to the adjacent half of the next fringe. Continue across the bottom in this way, tying half of each fringe to the next half and ending with the last fringe half being tied to the entire last fringe. (PHOTO E)
- Repeat this process for the second row of ties, working from left to right and tying half of one fringe to the adjacent half of the next fringe. (PHOTO F)
- Trim the ends to your desired length, repeat these instructions for the other end of your wrap, and you are DONE!
