Welcome to Mason Jar Yarn Designs! In this crochet photo tutorial, you will find row-by-row instructions for crocheting an asymmetrical wrap. The pattern referenced here is for The Watercolors Wrap, an asymmetrical wrap with tassels that features hand-dyed yarn for a one-of-a-kind accessory. An asymmetrical wrap or scarf is worked by increasing each row by one stitch on the same side, either at the beginning of a row or at the end of a row. The finished design will not be a perfect triangle but will have one longer side of the triangle. While an asymmetrical shape can seem daunting and difficult, the row repeats become more familiar as you work this wrap. The resulting finished wrap really showcases the hand-dyed yarn to perfection with gorgeous texture.

The free pattern is available on the blog and you can purchase the ad-free PDF digital download version from my Etsy shop here.

Let’s get this crochet photo tutorial started!

First, you will begin with your main color (COLOR A) by creating your slip knot and chaining 3.

Reference Photos – Rows 1 through 11

Row 1 – You will work two double crochets into the third chain from your hook (the first chain you made). Including the starting chain, you will have three stitches. Turn your work and chain two to begin your next row.

Row 2 – In the first stitch from the hook, closest to your turning chain, work one double crochet. (This is your increase stitch, and you will continue to increase on this same side to create the asymmetrical shape, either at the beginning of a row as described here or at the end of a row.) Work a double crochet into the next stitch and you will be left with the turning chain from the row below. Work one double crochet into the top of that turning chain. Turn and chain two.

Row 3 – Skip the first stitch from the hook and double crochet into the next stitch. Work one double crochet into each stitch across until just the turning chain remains. Work two double crochets into the top of the turning chain (this is your increase stitch, this time worked at the end of the row). Turn and chain two.

Rows 4 through 11 of the pattern are worked by repeating rows two and three. You will have 13 total stitches at the end of row 11. You will change colors to your alternating color (COLOR B) before beginning the next row.

Reference Photos – Row 12

Row 12 – Continuing the crochet photo tutorial with COLOR B, you will chain two and turn your work. Work one half double crochet into the first stitch from the hook (increase stitch). Continue to work half double crochets across the row until the turning chain remains. Work one half double crochet into the top of the turning chain. Turn and chain two.

Reference Photos – Row 13

Row 13 – Skip the first stitch from the hook (indicated with the needle) and work one double crochet into the next stitch. You will then work a double crochet around the post of the previous double crochet you worked. This is a wrapped stitch (see SPECIAL STITCHES for instructions). Skip the next stitch and create another wrapped stitch. You will work wrapped stitches across the row until just one stitch and the turning chain remain. Skip the last stitch (indicated with the needle) and work two double crochets into the top of the turning chain (increase stitch). Turn and chain two.

Special Stitches – The Wrapped Stitch

WRAPPED STITCH:  Work one double crochet into the stitch indicated.  YO, insert hook around the post of the double crochet stitch just worked, YO and pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook).  YO, pull through 2 loops, YO and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the hook.

Reference Photos – Rows 14 through 16

Rows 14 – 15 will be a repeat of these two rows (rows 12 and 13) as indicated in the written pattern.

Row 16 will be a repeat of row 14. You should have 18 total stitches at the end of this section. Switch back to COLOR A for the remainder of this crochet photo tutorial, chain two and turn your work.

Reference Photos – Rows 17 and 18

Row 17 – Skip the first stitch from your hook and double crochet in the next stitch. Continue to double crochet in each stitch across the row until just the turning chain remains. Work two double crochets into the top of the turning chain (increase stitch). Turn and chain two.

Row 18 – Work one double crochet into the first stitch from the hook, closest to the turning chain (increase stitch). Double crochet into the next stitch and in each stitch across until just the turning chain remains. Work one double crochet into the top of the turning chain, chain two and turn your work.

Reference Photos – Row 19

Row 19 – Skip the first stitch from your hook and double crochet into the next stitch. Chain one, skip the next stitch and double crochet into the next stitch. This creates the open blocks in this section. You will continue to chain one, skip a stitch and double crochet across the row until one stitch and the turning chain remains. Skip the last stitch and work two double crochets into the top of the turning chain (increase stitch). Chain two and turn your work.

Reference Photos – Rows 20 and 21

Row 20: Work the first double crochet into the same stitch as the turning chain (increase stitch) and double crochet into the next stitch. Work the next double crochet into the space created by the chain one from the row below, rather than working into the actual stitch, as indicated in the first photo below. Double crochet into the next stitch and continue this way across the row, working stitches into the stitch below and the chain space, until just the turning chain remains. Work one double crochet into the top of that turning chain, chain two and turn your work for the next row.

Row 21: This is a repeat of row 17.

Reference Photos – Row 22

Row 22: You will work this row as a variation of row 19 but in reverse, with the increase worked at the beginning of the row. Work your first double crochet into the first stitch from your hook (increase stitch). Chain one, skip the next stitch and double crochet into the next stitch. You will continue to chain one, skip a stitch and double crochet across the row until one stitch and the turning chain remains. Work one double crochet into the top of the turning chain, chain two and turn.

Reference Photos – Row 23

Row 23: As with the previous row, this row is also a variation of row 20 but in reverse with the increase worked at the end of the row. Work your first double crochet into the chain space from the row below, skipping the stitch closest to the turning chain. Double crochet into the next stitch and continue this way across the row, working stitches into the stitch below and the chain space, until just the turning chain remains. Work two double crochets into the top of that turning chain, chain two and turn your work.

Reference Photos – Rows 24 through 26

The remaining rows in this crochet photo tutorial, rows 24 through 27, are just repeats of rows already worked, as follows:

Row 24 will be a repeat of row 18, row 25 will be a repeat of row 19 and row 26 is a repeat of row 20.

Reference Photos – Row 27

And lastly, row 27 will be a repeat of row 17. You will change colors at the end of this row. Continue to work the instructions for rows 12 through 27 until the final row as indicated in the pattern (or you run out of yarn – ha!)
