Happy New Year! 2022 is here and the possibilities are ENDLESS, and I am full of hope and promise for what we will do with this year. I am starting off the year by trying a new yarn and making a quick and easy crochet scarf using one of my favorite stitches. A little of the tried and true, and a little brand new – how perfect is that for a fresh new year!
I stumbled upon the Iris Stitch last spring when I was looking for an open lacy stitch for a summer cardigan and I fell in love with how textured and fancy it looks. It is a single row repeat that is so crazy easy to work! Since then, I have made several projects using the Iris Stitch, from scarves to wraps to cardigans and I am excited to write up my first pattern featuring this fun stitch. This easy crochet scarf pattern would look beautiful with a hand-dyed or variegated yarn as well. I have also made this Iris Stitch scarf using bulky yarn, and I loved the way the finished project looked – it is truly a wonderful and versatile stitch.
THAT YARN . . .
For an elegant and elevated scarf and to do justice to this textured stitch, I wanted to use a yarn that was light and delicate, and Lion Brand’s Truboo Sparkle was the perfect choice! Truboo Sparkle is a #3 lightweight yarn that is 96% rayon from bamboo and 4% polyester and is so soft with a lovely drape. I enjoyed working with this yarn because of the silky and lustrous feel, and the touch of subtle sparkle that shows in the right light. The colorway Star was chosen for its pale grey and silvery look to evoke these cold wintry nights when the sky is so clear and starry.
This easy crochet scarf is a dream to work up and finishes quickly for a great project for yourself or to give as a gift. This scarf is so customizable for whatever length you want; you can add the tassels as I did or add a fringe instead or leave them off entirely. The Luminescence Scarf – Easy Crochet Pattern
An easy crochet scarf pattern using a simple stitch with lovely tassels and a hint of sparkle, this long lacy scarf works up quickly and will be an elegant addition to your wardrobe.
SKILL LEVEL: Easy
MATERIALS:
Lion Brand Truboo Sparkle (Weight: 3/Light 96% Rayon from Bamboo, 4% Polyester – 195 yards/178m, 3oz/85g)
- Star – 3 skeins (approximately 585 yards)
Yarn needle
GAUGE:
Gauge is not important for this project, as long as you are working the indicated number of iris stitches across.
- 7 iris stitches plus one double crochet and turning chain X 7 rows = 7 inches
ABBREVIATIONS:
ch – chain
st – stitch
sk – skip
tch – turning chain
ch-sp – chain space
dc – double crochet
rep – repeat
PATTERN NOTES:
This blanket is crocheted using the Iris Stitch:
- You will (2dc, ch1, 2dc) into the same stitch as indicated, and each row of iris stitch is made by crocheting (2dc, ch1, 2dc) into the chain space of the iris stitch of the row below. Scroll through the slideshow below for photo references in creating this stitch:

You will work your final double crochet into the top chain of the turning chain, as indicated with the stitch marker.
- There is no wrong side or right side.
- The ch 3 turning chain does count as a stitch.
- Total stitch count at the end of each row is not important. If you crochet 7 iris stitches and find that you do not have two stitches and the turning chain left, you might have skipped too many or not enough stitches.
- Each row consists of the turning chain, 7 iris stitches and one double crochet at the end of the row. This measured to be 7 inches per the gauge above.
- The length of this easy crochet scarf can be customized by removing or adding rows.
THE PATTERN:
Ch 31.
Row 1: (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in 5th chain from hook. *Sk next three ch, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch*. Rep from * to * until 2 ch remain. Sk 1 ch, 1 dc in last ch, turn.
Row 2: ch 3, sk first 3 st, (2dc, ch1 2dc) in ch-sp. *Sk next 4 st, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in ch-sp*. Rep from * to * until 2 dc remain. Sk last 2 dc, 1 dc in top of tch, turn.
Row 3 – 139: Repeat Row 2.
After row 139 (or desired number of rows for customized length) is worked, fasten off. Weave in all your yarn ends.
Finishing details for your easy crochet scarf:

- Using an object that measures approximately 5×7 (here I have used my crochet hook case), wrap the yarn around approximately 8 times. You can wrap less or more yarn as desired to achieve the size tassel you want.
- Slide the yarn off the item; you will have a nice circle of yarn. Cut your yarn at one end so that you have several long strands of yarn in a bunch.
- Take a long piece of yarn (this will be used to tie your tassels to your scarf), and tie in a knot in the middle of your yarn bunch.
- Take another long piece of yarn and tie around the upper third of your yarn bunch to make the round top part of the tassel; leave a yarn tail a bit longer than your tassel when you tie your knot, so that you have a short yarn tail and a long yarn tail.
- Being careful to hold the short yarn tail away from the tassel, wrap the longer yarn tail around the yarn bunch until you have the desired thickness. Use your short yarn tail to tie a knot with the longer yarn tail to secure this band. If desired, use your yarn needle to work those yarn ends into the middle of the tassel.
- Trim your tassels to the desired length and attach to the ends of your scarf as desired.
