Gather together . . .

Family dinners and gatherings are core memories for me. The majority of our extended family lived in Virginia, therefore growing up in North Carolina meant that we spent a lot of holidays and special events traveling to one grandparent’s house or the other. Generally for every family visit, there was at least one dinner!

So many gatherings, in every season – they all blend together in my mind but the quality and quantity of the food every time we were all gathered together always stands out! Food, music, and ambiance all combine to create experiences as children that shape who we are as adults. Whenever I handcraft special occasion decorations or decor for my house, I hope to create a piece to hand down to my kids for them to use for their special gatherings. And so I am excited to add The Gatherings Crochet Table Runner to my pattern collection!

Crochet Table Runner – Design and Inspiration

This crochet table runner is worked from the long edge, which means an unfortunately long starting chain! But once you finish the first few rows, the rest of the project flies off the hook. Create a lovely texture by crocheting two stitches into the same stitch in alternating single and double crochet rows. This texture markedly shows itself in the striping rows. Using a smaller stitch and hook size can sometimes create a dense and heavy drape, but a few rows of skipped stitches reminiscent of lattice keep the table runner from being too stiff in addition to adding visual interest. And like every gathering, every table size is different so the pattern is written for three lengths and two widths to choose from to better customize to your specific dimensions. Lastly, add fringe at each end for the perfect finishing touch to this simple and elegant crochet table runner.

Yarn Talk!

I wanted a lighter-weight cotton yarn for this crochet table runner so that it would hold up to repeated use and washing. 100% cotton is great, but there is nothing better for sturdy durability than a cotton linen blend. Given that, CotLin DK by WeCrochet is the perfect option for crochet home decor. The linen content helps the yarn stand up to all kinds of handling and keep its shape, while the cotton makes for a softer feeling project. I chose a warm autumn palette for my sample, but this yarn comes in several gorgeous colors so you can customize your crochet table runner for your specific decor or holiday. This would be lovely in vintage Christmas colors!

PATTERN NOTES:

  • This textured table runner is created lengthways, by working a long foundation chain and then building up in turned rows.  I recommend using stitch markers to mark the foundation chain in sections of 25 or 50 to help with keeping your count.
  • Ch 2 does count as a stitch.
  • The pattern is written for three lengths and two widths, to allow better customization for your specific tables and surfaces.  You can crochet as few or as many chains as you like for the foundation chain as long as your foundation chain is an odd number.
  • The color changes written in the pattern are specific to the total number of rows allotted for each width. Please keep this in mind if you are removing or adding rows so that you will achieve your desired aesthetic with your color changes and stripes.
  • Lengths are indicated in parentheses at the end of each row with the shortest length to longest as follows:  [S (M, L)].
    • For example, instructions reading Ch 271 (379, 487) means that you will chain 271 if you are making the size Small (60-inches/5 feet long).
  • Widths are indicated in parentheses with the smallest width to largest as follows:  13 in (16 in).
    • For example, instructions for Rows 6 – 21 (25) means that you will crochet until Row 21 for the 13-inch-wide version and Row 25 for the 16-inch-wide version.
  • The pattern is written in multiples of two and the first single crochet row will be an even number of stitches.

Additional Finishing Notes:

  • Although not required, lightly steam block your table runner to smooth out the edges and make sure the width is uniform all the way down the length.  If you are blocking your table runner, I recommend doing so prior to adding fringe.
  • Add fringe to the table runner ends in the corresponding colors for a fun and festive addition to your special gatherings and table décor. TIP:  Leave your color change ends long enough to incorporate into the fringe so you don’t have to weave those ends in!

Adding Fringe to your Crochet Table Runner

  • Using a book, your tablet, or a picture frame (at least 5×7 inches), wind leftover yarn around this object several times and cut at one end to create several strands approximately 12 inches long.  You will want to use all three colors so that the fringe carries the color of the stripe.  Each fringe will consist of two strands of yarn.
  • With your table runner lying right side facing up, insert your hook where you want to place your fringe and loop the two strands over the hook to pull through.  The color of the fringe should match the color of the section you are attaching it to.
  • Pull the ends of the strands through the loop that was created and tighten.
  • Repeat the above steps for the other side of the table runner, making sure the project is facing right side up.
  • Trim your fringe as desired and you are done!
