Summer Crochet Is Here!
Sure, crocheting in the fall is the definition of cozy; however, summer crochet brings its own kind of magic. While some might tuck their yarn away when the mercury rises, I see it as the perfect opportunity to create lightweight sweaters, airy tops, and stylish bags that pair effortlessly with sundresses and denim shorts. And so, I am thrilled to introduce my first project of the summer: The Haven Top! This easy crochet top pattern not only embraces the beauty of summer stitching, but also keeps things light and wearable, making it perfect for warm-weather days.

Design and Inspiration for The Haven Top
I love a boxy and relaxed fit top for summer; in fact, The Clarity Top and The Kismet Top are great examples to draw inspiration from. With that in mind, I set out to create a design that’s both comfortable and lightweight—something that could be effortlessly paired with jeans, shorts, or even a sundress. This easy crochet summer top is made in two panels that are seamed together. Additionally, it features a shaped open neckline and short sleeves. Also, this is my favorite time of year to work with cotton blend yarns, and Shine Sport by Crochet.com is one of the best! This Pima cotton and modal blend is so soft and easy to work with, and the drape is just incredible. There’s something so satisfying about working with lightweight cotton blends, knowing that the final piece will be breezy, comfortable, and effortlessly stylish.

OVERALL PATTERN NOTES:
- Pattern is written in smallest size with larger sizes following in parentheses, as follows: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X).
- This crochet top is worked in two panels from the bottom up. Shaping rows are added to the top of the panels to create a scooped neck opening.
- The panels are then seamed together, leaving openings for the armholes. Short sleeves are crocheted onto the armholes in turned rounds. The length of this short sleeve is the same for all sizes.
- The top is finished with two simple rounds that are crocheted directly onto the neck opening.
- There is no right side or wrong side when you are crocheting the panels. This is determined after your panels are completed and prior to seaming them together.
- Ch 1 DOES count as a stitch unless otherwise indicated in the pattern.
- Ch 2 does NOT count as a stitch.
- If you are adding length to your top, end with a Row 6 repeat and make sure to adjust the panels accordingly to account for the shaping rows. For example, instructions for size L indicate to work row repeats until row 72 is reached. If you want to add 6 rows to size L, the front panel will now end at row 78 before beginning your neckline shaping rows. Make the same adjustments for the back panel to allow for the shaping rows.
Special Stitches
Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog): Insert hook into intended stitch, YO and pull up a loop (two loops on the hook). Insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull up a loop (three loops on the hook). YO and pull through all three loops.

Seaming the Panels Together
There is no right or wrong side to your panels, but you will want to determine which sides are facing out when you wear your top. You can do this by laying the panels side by side on your work surface and lining up the rows so they visually match. Once you have determined this, place a stitch marker somewhere on the panel to determine the RIGHT SIDE (RS) versus the WRONG SIDE (WS). Seam the panels together with the WS facing out.
Lay the back panel flat with the RS facing up and lay the front panel on top with the WS facing up. Line up the stitches across the shoulders and pin with stitch markers. Line up the rows on the sides and pin with stitch markers, leaving 6.5 (7, 7.5, 8, 8.5) (9, 9.5, 10, 10.5) inches for the armholes.
Seam the shoulders using the yarn tails and your preferred seaming method. Join yarn at the bottom hem and seam up the sides towards the armpits.

SLEEVES
Before beginning the sleeve rounds, turn your top inside out so that the RS is facing out. Crochet the sleeves onto the armholes in turned rounds that do not decrease. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch worked in each round to more easily keep your place and help with overall stitch count. Sleeve instructions are the same for all sizes.
FIRST SLEEVE
With the RS facing out and the top panel facing up on your work surface, join yarn at the armpit of the armhole on your right side. Working up the FRONT PANEL:
Round 1: Ch 2, evenly work esc sts into ends of the rows up the front panel towards the shoulder and down the back panel to the armpit. Sl st to marked st. Turn. [62 (66, 72, 76, 80) (86, 90, 96, 100) sts]
Round 2: Ch 2, esc in 1st st. Esc in each st around. Sl st to marked st. Turn.
Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in 1st st. *Ch 1, sk next st, hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * until one st remains. Hdc in last st. Sl st to marked st. Turn.
Round 4: Ch 2, esc in 1st st, 2 esc in 1st ch-sp. 2 esc in each ch-sp around until one st remains. Esc in last st. Sl st to marked st. Turn.
Round 5: Ch 2, esc in 1st st. Esc in each st around. Sl st to marked st but do not turn.
Round 6: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in both loops 1st st. Sc BLO in next st and in each st around. Sl st to marked st and fasten off.

SECOND SLEEVE
With RS facing out and the top panel facing up and the finished first sleeve to your right, join yarn at the armpit of the armhole on your left side. Working up the BACK PANEL:
Round 1: Ch 2, evenly work esc sts into ends of the rows up the back panel towards the shoulder and down the front panel to the armpit. Sl st to marked st. Turn. [62 (66, 72, 76, 80) (86, 90, 96, 100) sts]
Repeat Rounds 2 – 6 as for first sleeve.

Adding Finishing Details at the Neckline
- Finishing details for the neck opening are worked by attaching yarn at the neckline and working stitches in two rounds that do not turn.
- The total number of stitches is not specified as long as stitches are worked evenly into the ends of the shaping rows so that the first round does not pucker or curl.
With the top still RS out, lay the top flat with the shaped front panel facing up. Join yarn at the right-hand side of the neck opening at the shoulder seam.
Working down the opening of the front panel:
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as ch and PM in this st. Evenly work sc sts into the ends of the shaping rows and across the opening of the front panel, and into the ends of the back panel shaping rows and back panel, back around to the marked st. Do not turn.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in both loops of 1st st. Sc BLO in next st and in each st around. Sl st to marked st and fasten off.
Weave in all your ends and enjoy your summer Haven Top!
