Granny Stripe Crochet Blanket Details

This blanket is perfect for beginners, using basic stitches and soothing repetition. There are two alternating sections: the half double crochet section worked in the main color and the granny stripe section worked in the contrast colors. The granny stripe section really pops against the neutral rows in between. In my sample, the specific order of the color changes is randomized for each section.  As long as you are crocheting two stripes in each color, you will have enough yardage in each contrast color. The pattern is written for one size but this blanket can easily be customized for smaller sizes.  Finish your blanket with a simple two round border using half double crochet stitches, or customize for a thicker border.

About the Yarn

My go-to yarn for blankets is Heartland by Lion Brand. Wonderfully soft and varied, it’s featured in both The Fairy Tale Blanket and The Fern Forest Throw. This 100% acrylic yarn is easy to work with and provides amazing drape and texture and heathered softness. I used fall inspired colors for The Cascades Blanket, but Heartland comes in many gorgeous colors. Create your own palette to match your aesthetic and decor. Make your granny stripe crochet blanket as unique as you are!

PATTERN NOTES:

  • The blanket is reversible and there is no right or wrong side.
  • The pattern is written for one size but can easily be customized for smaller sizes.  The starting chain is a multiple of 3 plus 2 for the foundation chain.  The stitch count for each subsequent row will be a multiple of 3.  Make sure your final stitch count is also an even number.
  • The starting chain is worked with the same hook size. Make sure to chain loosely so the next row does not pucker.  You can also go up a hook size if that works better for you.
  • Ch 2 and Ch 3 do NOT count as a stitch.
  • The pattern is worked in two alternating sections: the half double crochet section worked in the main color and the granny stripe section worked in the contrast colors.   There are 9 sections of half double crochet stitches and 8 sections of granny stripes.
  • Each granny stripe section consists of ten rows total, with two stripes in each color.  In my sample, the specific order of the color changes is randomized for each section.  As long as you are crocheting two stripes in each color, you will have enough yardage in each contrast color as indicated in the materials.
  • Colors changes are made at the end of the rows before turning.
  • I recommend placing a stitch marker in the first stitch of each row worked and moving it up row by row, in order to ensure proper stitch placement.
  • The blanket is finished with a simple border of half double crochet stitches in rounds that do not turn.

Rows 19 – 24:  Repeat Row 18.  After row 24, switch to chosen Contrast Color.

Rows 25 – 143:  Repeat Section One and Section Two.  At the end of the last Section Two worked, do not change color and do not turn.  You will continue to work the border rounds in the Main Color.

Border Details

  • After completing Row 143, you will begin the first border round by turning the blanket and working stitches into the ends of the rows that make up the long side of the blanket, along the beginning chain, up the other long side and along the last row worked.  You will work (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in each corner.
  • The border is worked in two rounds that do not turn.
  • Stitch markers are used to mark the corner chain spaces.
  • The total stitch count does not matter as long as the stitches in the first round are worked evenly and do not pucker.

Continuing with Main Color, do not turn after completing Row 143.

Round 1:

  • Long side of the blanket:  Ch 1 and evenly work hdc sts into the ends of the rows.  PM in first st worked.  At the end of this side, work (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) into turning ch-sp from starting row at bottom of blanket.
  • Bottom of the blanket:  Hdc in each st along bottom starting row, working (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) into last st.
  • Opposite long side of the blanket:  Evenly work hdc sts into the ends of the rows.  At the end of this side, work (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) into turning ch-sp.
  • Top of the blanket:  Hdc in each st along top of blanket back to marked st.  (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in marked st, do not turn.

Round 2:  Hdc BLO in each st around, working (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in each corner ch-sp until marked st is reached.  (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in marked stitch, sl st in next st.

Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
