The Fairytale Blanket!

This textured crochet blanket started out as several different projects, each one set aside for one reason or another. Sometimes an idea works and sometimes it does not, but when I came across this color palette of purples and greens and soft pink, the design for this blanket fell into place! Overall, I wanted simple and uncomplicated textured rows that could be repeated with just enough interest to stay engaged without being too time-consuming or difficult. The combination of herringbone double crochet together with bean stitches in repeating color blocks was the exact texture I was looking for and I love the result!

To sum up, the blanket is finished with a simple border of half double crochet stitches in alternating colors to bring it all together.

Let’s talk Yarn for this Textured Crochet Blanket!

I was not originally planning to use Lion Brand Heartland for this textured crochet blanket, though it is a staple and one of my favorite acrylic yarns. But the shades of purple and green and pink that I put together while in the planning stage were just perfect together! I love Heartland for making blankets, it’s so soft and easy to work with and provides amazing drape for a worsted-weight yarn. It comes in several colors and the yardage is particularly generous at 251 yards per skein, a bonus for a blanket of this size. Check out the Fern Forest Throw, also featuring Heartland and some of the same colors!

PATTERN NOTES:

  • The blanket is reversible, consequently there is no right or wrong side.

  • Ch 1 and Ch 2 do NOT count as a stitch.
  • The pattern is worked in repeating color blocks consisting of 6 rows.  You will work two rows of herringbone double crochet, two rows of the bean stitch, and then two rows of herringbone double crochet.
  • Color changes are made at the end of the indicated row before turning, as per the color change chart.
  • Finally, the blanket is finished with a simple border of half double crochet stitches in turned rounds.

Border Details

  • After completing Row 150, you will begin the first border round by turning the blanket and working stitches into the ends of the rows that make up the long side of the blanket.
  • The border is worked in five rounds that turn, changing color per round.
  • Stitch markers are used to mark the corner chain spaces.
  • Working into the ends of the rows on the long side of the blanket, you will evenly work 8 hdc stitches per every 6-row color block.
  • The total stitch count does not matter as long as your border stitches are worked evenly and do not pucker.

Continuing with Color A, do not turn after completing Row 150.

Round 1:

  • Long side of the blanket:  Ch 1 and evenly work hdc sts into the ends of the rows, working 8 hdc sts for every 6-row color block.  At the end of this side, work (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) into turning ch-sp from starting row at bottom of blanket.
  • Bottom of the blanket:  Hdc in each st along bottom starting row, working (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) into last st.
  • Opposite long side of the blanket:  Evenly work hdc sts into the ends of the rows, working 8 hdc sts for every 6-row color block.  At the end of this side, work (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) into turning ch-sp.
  • Top of the blanket:  Hdc in each st along top of blanket back to first st, working 2 hdc into last st.  Ch 1, sl st into 1st st of round and change to Color C.  Turn.

Round 2:  Ch 2, 2 hdc into same st at base of tch and PM into tch.  Hdc FLO into each st across, working (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) into each corner ch-sp.  Working back around to first st worked, 2 hdc into same space as first two hdc sts, ch 1 and sl st into first st, changing to Color F.  Turn.

Round 3:  Repeat Round 2, changing to Color E

Round 4:  Repeat Round 2, fasten off and weave in all your ends.
