Oh October, I have waited all year for you! This is my favorite time of year, and it always feels like this month just flies by. The weather here has been beautiful this past week – bright blue skies and brilliant fall foliage, no humidity and a lovely breeze. I wish it would stay like this for longer!
And there is no better time to dig into a cozy squishy project while binging all your favorite shows – The Sugar Maple Throw is the perfect choice! This textured crochet throw uses double crochet stitches in alternating rows of back and front loops with just the right amount of self-striping yarn for contrast.

Textured Crochet Throw Design and Inspiration
The inspiration for this stitch combo came from a scarf design that was published last year – The Hemlock Scarf. As I was working on that scarf last year, I was thinking that the squishy texture would be dreamy for a blanket. And it’s such a simple project to crochet! This textured crochet throw is worked in a seven-row repeat of double crochet stitches that are worked in the back loop and front loop only. Alternating where you place the double crochet stitches is what creates that ribbed squishy texture. Using a neutral solid for the main color and a variegated or self-striping yarn for the accent color provides just the right amount of contrast without being too stripey.

The Perfect Yarn for a Textured Crochet Throw
Color Theory by Lion Brand Yarn was the perfect worsted weight choice for this textured crochet throw; it comes in lots of beautiful colors and is so soft and easy to work with. I chose the Moonbeam colorway for a creamy neutral base so that the accent color would pop. I did some stash busting and came up with several skeins of Ferris Wheel, also by Lion Brand, in the Buttercup colorway. This self-striping yarn had all the colors of fall – maple red, burnt orange, deep blue and golden yellow. I love how subtle the color changes are throughout the blanket.

PATTERN NOTES:
- Although the texture on both sides of the blanket is different, the blanket is reversible and there is no right or wrong side.
- The pattern is written for one size but can easily be customized for smaller sizes. The starting chain is a multiple of 2 plus 2 for the foundation chain. The stitch count for each subsequent row will be two stitches less than the starting chain.
- Work the starting chain with the same hook size, making sure to chain with a relaxed tension so the first row does not pucker. You can also go up a hook size if that works better for you.
- Ch 1 and Ch 2 do NOT count as stitches.
- The pattern is crocheted in a six-row repeat; double crochet stitches are worked by alternating between front loop and back loop only to create a gorgeous and squishy texture. The accent color is added in one row of open stitches per six-row repeat.
- Make colors changes at the end of the rows before turning.
- I recommend placing a stitch marker in the first stitch of each row worked and moving it up row by row, in order to ensure proper stitch placement.
- The blanket is finished with a simple border of half double crochet stitches in rounds that do not turn.
THE PATTERN:

Rows 8 – 115: Repeat Rows 2 – 7.
Rows 116 – 119: Repeat Rows 2 – 5. Do not break yarn, you will move on to the border rounds, beginning with the Main Color.
Border Details
- After completing Row 119, begin the first border round by turning the blanket and working hdc stitches into the stitches of the last row, followed by hdc stitches into the ends of the rows that make up the long side of the blanket, along the beginning chain, and up the other long side. You will work (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in each corner.
- Use stitch markers to mark the corner chain spaces.
- The border is worked in five rounds that do not turn.
- The total stitch count does not matter as long as the stitches in the first round are worked evenly and do not pucker.
Continuing with Main Color:.
Round 1:
- Top of the blanket: Ch 1, hdc in first st (same st at base of tch), PM in this st. Hdc in each st along top of blanket until one st remains. (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in last st, do not turn.
- Long side of the blanket: Evenly work hdc sts into the ends of the rows. At the end of this side, work (hdc, ch 2, hdc) into ch-sp from starting row at bottom of blanket.
- Bottom of the blanket: Hdc in each st along bottom starting row, working (hdc, ch 2, hdc) into last st.
- Opposite long side of the blanket: Evenly work hdc sts into the ends of the rows. At the end of this side, work (hdc, ch 2, hdc) into last st. DO NOT TURN.
Round 2: Hdc BLO in each st around, working (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in each corner ch2-sp back to beginning of round. (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ch2-sp, completing the last corner. DO NOT TURN, switch to Accent Color.

Round 3: Hdc in next st. *[Ch 1, sk next st, hdc in next st] until corner, work (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in corner ch2-sp. Hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * back to beginning of round. (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in last ch2-sp. DO NOT TURN, switch to Main Color.
NOTE: If one st remains before a corner, ch 1, sk next st, work (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in corner ch2-sp. Continue with (ch 1, sk next st, hdc in next st). End the round with (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in last ch2-sp. DO NOT TURN, switch to Main Color.
Round 4: Hdc in next st (st before first ch1-sp). 2 hdc in first ch1-sp. 2 hdc in each ch1-sp around, working (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in each corner ch2-sp until one corner remains. (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in last ch2-sp to complete the final corner of the round.
NOTE: If there is an extra stitch after the last ch2-sp and before a corner, hdc in that extra stitch before working the corner. If there is an extra stitch after working the corner and before the next ch1-sp, hdc in that extra stitch before continuing with 2 hdc in each ch1-sp. (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in last ch2-sp to complete the final corner of the round.
Round 5: Hdc BLO in each st around, working (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in each corner ch2-sp back to beginning of round, ending with hdc in last st before the last corner. Fasten off.
