Winter is upon us!
And it’s time to layer up! It’s been exceedingly cold here in North Carolina the last few weeks, we might even have broken the record for low temperatures for December. Like, single-digits for the overnight lows! Personally, I enjoyed it – I am one of those southern weirdos that actually like cold weather. But I will say, if it’s going to be that cold, it should at least be snowing and we didn’t get any at all.
One positive that comes from plummeting temperatures is that I feel even more motivated to crochet all the warm, chunky, bulky things. And what is the perfect quick and easy project to work on during this most hectic and busiest of seasons? A scarf, of course! Design Inspiration for the Bulky Crochet Winter Rose Scarf
For the gift exchange with my full-time coworkers, I made a bulky crochet scarf and it “went down a treat” as they say! I used the ever-versatile iris stitch, which is one of my all-time favorites and is featured in the Luminescence Scarf that was released earlier this year. The bulkier version I created for my company’s Christmas party uses the same stitch and it worked up so beautifully with the yarn I chose. Sometimes an inspiration knows it wants to be a written pattern before I come to that realization, so I set out to make a second one just before Christmas as my year-end pattern release.
Oh, that yarn!
This bulky crochet scarf uses Hygge yarn by Red Heart Yarns, and it is divine! With a mixture of acrylic and nylon and a slightly fuzzy fine string, this bulky yarn is incredibly soft and silky and dreamy against the skin. I chose the Rust colorway for this scarf, hence the name Winter Rose, but there are several gorgeous colors to choose from. This is the second time I have designed with this yarn – the Hygge Pocket Shawl features the Cloud colorway and is so incredibly soft and warm, like a wearable blanket! I definitely see more designs with Hygge in the future.

The Winter Rose Scarf: Free Pattern for a Bulky Crochet Scarf
The Winter Rose Scarf is a bulky crochet scarf that works up quickly using basic stitches and is perfect for beginners! This elegant lacy scarf is a beautiful way to keep warm in chilly weather.
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner +
MATERIALS:
US Size L/8.00 mm crochet hook
Red Heart Hygge: Weight – 5/Bulky 70% Acrylic, 30% Nylon – 212 yards/194 meters, 8 ounces/227 grams)
- Rust – 2 skeins (approximately 424 yards)
GAUGE:
- 4 iris stitches plus turning chain and last double crochet = 7 inches*
- *this is the finished width of the scarf
- 5 rows = 4.5 inches
(Gauge is not important for this project as long as 4 iris stitches are worked as indicated in the instructions for Row 2 to create the width of your finished scarf)
Finished length of the featured scarf (not including fringe) = 85.5 inches
ABBREVIATIONS:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sk – skip
st(s) – stitch(es)
tch – turning chain
ch-sp – chain space
PATTERN NOTES:
This bulky crochet scarf features the Iris Stitch:
- You will work (2dc, ch1, 2dc) into the same stitch as indicated, and each row of iris stitch is made by crocheting this (2dc, ch1, 2dc) cluster into the chain space of the iris stitch of the row below.
- The turning chain does count as a stitch.
- There is no wrong side or right side.
- Total stitch count at the end of each row is not important. If you crochet 4 iris stitches and find that you do not have two stitches and the turning chain left, you may not have skipped the right number of stitches.
- Each row consists of the turning chain, 4 iris stitches and one double crochet at the end of the row. This measured to be 7 inches per the gauge above.
- The length of this easy bulky crochet scarf can be customized by removing or adding rows.
THE PATTERN:
Foundation Row: Ch 19.
Row 1: (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in 5th ch from hook. *Sk next three ch, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch*. Rep from * to * until 2 ch remain. Sk 1 ch, dc in last ch, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, sk st at base of tch and next 2 sts, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in ch-sp. *Sk next 4 sts, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in ch-sp*. Rep from * to * until 2 sts and tch remain. Sk last 2 sts, dc in top of tch, turn.
Row 3 – 95: Repeat Row 2.
After row 95 (or desired number of rows for preferred length) is worked, fasten off. Weave in all your yarn ends.

Adding fringe to your bulky crochet scarf
Cut several strands of leftover yarn, approximately 12 inches long and separate them into sections with four strands each. 
Insert your hook where you want to place your fringe and loop the four strands over to pull through. 
Pull the ends of the strands through the loop that was created and tighten. 
Trim your fringe as desired and you are done!
